FetInRealLife #9 – DIY Cuffs and Blindfolds
This covers a couple of the more basic necessities of bondage: Restraints and Blindfolds. Using the information in this video, you can throw together functional wrist and ankle restraints all for about $10.00. Additionally, I’ll show you a fast and easy blindfold that you can use with standard household items: a hand towel, and some rope or string.

As always, play safely. Always be careful not to injure someone, and always discuss limits ahead of time.

A couple of months ago, I decided to take a chance and experiment with dying my own clothes pins. I bought a bunch of them so I could give some to PG, a friend who’s birthday was coming up and some for myself. It’s really simple to do and I thought I would share.

The dye

The first step is to go to a grocery store or dollar store and pick up some clothing dye and a bunch of clothes pins. I got two packs of dye for and 200 clothes pins for $4.00. You can choose a range of colours or even mix your own. For my first time I decided to go with blue and red. Follow the directions of the dye package. I used an old pot and started boiling the water and once it was going I inserted the clothespins. I was constantly checking on them and turning them to ensure all the clothes pins received enough dye. I was overly cautious and left them in for 30 minutes per batch.

After they were done, I scoped them out and tried to keep as much dye in as possible in by using a strainer scooper (don’t know the technical name). I put it in the another pot and rinsed and drained them until they ran clear. After that I put down multiple layers of newspaper on my balcony and let them dry out for a couple of days.

They turned out perfectly and I couldn’t of been happier. It was a great addition to the other gifts I gave and I’m looking. It’s an easy project that you can do yourself and a nice addition to the usual plain wood clothespins.

By being creative and crafty you can learn to make many of your required toys for play, and all this on a budget. I’ll show you what basic tools you need, explain a few techniques and give you a resource list to get you going. I will also share with you ideas of converting everyday items into play toys, called pervertibles.

We had a contest at my group on Fetlife, the BDSM Toys Craft Corner, where we awaited the 6,666 member to join us. We asked fellow members to donate a homemade toy. Well we got 30 donations! WOW. So the 6,666 member automatically won and the other toys were drawn randomly amongst the pool of members. That moment came Saturday night (when I was not even home), May 30th, 2009.

As some of you may know I run the BDSM Toys Craft Corner on Fetlife. Since its beginning is has always been on the top list of most popular groups, we are close to 6,200 members.

I really love crocheting. I usually make stuffed animals, but recently I’ve been wanting some baby mits. They’re great for bondage or just looking cute and I had *tons* of pastel yarn. The first ones I made were the little pink ones, that fit me, but I started making them in bigger and bigger sizes to fit others. (I have really small hands.) I be crafty!

I love anal sex–actually receiving, as well as giving.  I don’t consider a scene complete if it doesn’t contain at least some anal penetration, so when I saw that the TES Dominant Women/submissive men special interest group meeting was going to be on anal sex and strapon play, I figured I had to go.  I’ve been a member of TES for several years but don’t often go to the meetings.  The thought of staying at work for an extra couple of hours wasn’t often very attractive and, living outside of Manhattan, if I went home from work, I’d end up being there for about an hour and have to turn around and go right back into the city.  So a meeting had to really be impressive for me to attend.

(Now that I’ve been laid off–yes, I’m yet another casualty–it’s not that difficult a choice anymore.)

And as I said, I love anal sex, so I went to last Wednesday’s meeting.  The room was mobbed.  There were so many people that an extra row of chairs needed to be added, in fact, it looked like the yearly election of board members, rather than the monthly Dominant Women’s SIG.

Felice Shays presented and she brought lots of items for show and tell.  She brought plugs, beads and dildos of every size, shape and material, which she passed around (only teaching props, not used insertables, got passed) for people to feel and get a close up look at.  She talked about lube, lube and more lube, which I was very glad to hear.  These days you hear about more and more people talking about lubeless anal sex and I worry about people actually believing that’s OK.  It’s always refreshing to hear presenters speaking responsibly.

Now, like I said, I gotta have at least some anal penetration in a scene and I’m plenty happy if the whole thing revolves around said penetration, so none of this was new to me.  I came for the strapon demo, during which time Ms Shays would be fucking a demo bottom.  You see, my boy loves anal penetration too and has wanted to go further with it.  Unfortunately, he’s not around enough for proper anal training.  He has a tight ass hole and really needs daily training so he can work up to longer sessions and larger plugs and dildos.  I could fuck him all day, by hand, but I’d never tried a strap before.  He bought me one  but I’ve yet to get the hang of it.  I really wanted to see it in action and so was looking forward to the demo.

Well, it seems there were a lot of anal novices and newbies who had lots of questions and the time got away from everyone.  Unfortunately, even though it was decided that the meeting would continue after the break and the demo could happen, I had to leave before the good part.  I suppose I’ll just have to keep trying on my own.  You see, I’ve not been able to get things lined up correctly.  My boy made some comment like, “See, it’s not that easy when the shoe’s on the other foot,” or some such.  He, of course, got spanked for being a smart ass, but yes, I was hoping to get a good look at strapon fucking in action and be able to ask questions.  Well, if at first you don’t succeed…

A member of my Fetlife groug, BDSM Toy Craft Corner, posted about a naughty knitting book coming out and asked if anyone already had kinky knitting projects to share until she recieved her online order book. Well that occupied most of my Sunday afternoon on Google: searching for the BDSM knitting Holy Grail. Let me share some of my finds with you:

I have searched high and low for instruction to make a full leather hood without success. Really, I looked once in a while for a couple of weeks. Then I turned to my BDSM Toys Craft Corner group on Fetlife for help. Again, had some great suggestions but no one had A to Z instructions.

Well I gave it a shot with the ideas I had and now I will tell you how I did it. Hopefully many of you can benefit from it as well. It really helps if you know a bit about sewing. You will have to figure some thing out for yourself.

Now keep in mind that these instructions are to make a CUSTOM FITTED HOOD for the person who will wear it…and probably no one else. I tried this hood on others without success. Or you may make one and find you Cinderella sub for a glass slipper BDSM substitute lol.

1. Get some saran-wrap, tape, and rounded-edge scissors.

2. Time to mummify your head. Wrap your head up with saran-wrap completely. Make sure you have 2 layers when all done. Along the way make whole for you to breathe (its not a breath play session, you are making something here) and you can also cut out the eyes to see what you are doing.

3. Get your tape out and tape your head completely up everywhere. Cover all the saran-wrap. Again make holes to breathe.

4. Make one cut long enough to remove the hood. Tape the cut up. So now you end up (see pics below) with the 3D shape of your head.

5. Cut it into 3 pieces as show below. You will have a long rectangle (side and top of head), the front and the back. It won’t be flat. So make slits in the patterns to get a flat piece (see PINK arrows). Now you have a basic flat pattern to use.

6. Cut a rectangle that is about 4-5 inches wide and the length of the back of your hood. This will be the flap at the back.

7. Place your pattern on your leather and draw out our shapes.

8. Add a seam allowance, about 1/2 in everywhere, even on the slits…except on the big back closure slit. Add a few inches in length to the rectangle (mine was to short and I had to add a piece). Cut out your pieces and slits.

9. Star sewing up all your slits…except on the big back closure slit.

10. Sew the flap to the inside of the back piece (see blue lines above)

11. Sew your 3 pieces back together. For the back closure just fold back about 1/2 in and sew it down for a clean edge. The neck part may be a bit uneven so cut around it to make a straight line. I added a band of black leather for trim, just folded in half for a clean finish.

12. Cut out mouth, nose (a triangle) and eyes. For the mouth and eyes make tiny slits and fold back to sew the edge clean. The nose you need to add a bigger triangle sew into the two top triangle lines….cause if you just make a little hole your nose will be squashed inside. Anyways that is what I did.

Now you have the basic hood sewn up.

13. Time to make the back closure. I punched small holes every 1 inch and then attached little eyelets. Lace with a shoe lace.

14. If desired, make separate blindfold and mouth piece and add snaps so you can attach them to the hood for a sensory deprivation experience.

I am a big fan of DIY. I have always been crafty. In college I studied arts. That did not become a career path. But art remains a constant present in my life.
